electronic surface detection system for mechanical engravers

I read about electronic surface detection system in a 2011 article. It is supposed to help a rotary engraver keep an even engraving depth on uneven surfaces. I do not see it mentioned on any manufacturers website. Do any companies actually make engravers with this technology?

Most rotary engraver do have proximity sensors to detect surface materials being engraved.
Trotec Speedy 300 - 60w, with Quatro CSA-626 fume extraction
    Xenetech 1625 x2,
New Hermes TX pantograph, CG4 cutter grinder
    Brady Globalmark2 label printer,
Assortment of custom tooling , shears & punches, heat bender.
Software: Xenetech XOT, Corel X3, Bartender label software

I've seen several machines that use mechanical sensors, which may be considered 'electronic', but they're only intended to find an initial starting point, and assumes the material is flat and NOT uneven...

As for something like an automatic-ranging laser that will adjust cutting depth on-the-fly or something similar, I'd love to see one... But I've done okay without one for 40 years...

ELEVEN - rotary cutter tool machines
    FOUR - CO2 lasers
THREE- make that FOUR now - fiber lasers
    ONE - vinyl cutter
