you probably don't want to be buying them if you're still missing "core" tools. They're sort of like shooting planes that way, though even more niche :-).
Some folks work in niche aspects of woodworking. One of the things I have done with an edge trimming plane is to attach an angled piece to the fence to cut accurately angled edges. It works, but so can a dedicated shooting board, a jointer fence or free hand planing.
It doesn't have to be used only for squaring edges.
Though I do agree with you, it isn't a must have plane and most people would find better things on which to spend their money.
