Plate templates

I am looking for templates for chip carving plates. I just need to find the pattern for the outside of scalloped edge plates.

It has been a few years (decades) since I did any chip carving and I am unaware of any set patterns. I assume your are familiar with Wayne Barton... a search here gives a list of lots of books by him with patterns; some at a really really cheap price.

My approach would be to use the index wheel on the lathe then lay out the design with a compass and straight edge.
I know this isn't a lot of help.

There's a woodcarving forum here. They have a "sticky" tutorial there. NOT exactly what you're looking for but you may get better responses there. I thought the turorials were very helpful.

I'm not clear on this.
Are you looking for a chip pattern to fit a certain size and shaped scalloped plate?
Or are you looking for a pattern for the plate itself so you can make some plates to carve?


In case you are interested:
I have been making a variety of things on the lathe for carving. This is a basswood plate/platter with raised foot I made just for carving. I made a template from plastic, traced and shaped, then turned it on the lathe. I'm not carving this one but made it for a friend to carve.

I don't have any views from the side of the basswood plate/platter but these are similar. They are all about 8-9" across.

If you are wanting to lay out the scallops themselves I would use the index wheel on the lathe for accurate divisions.
With the pencil lead at center height draw a line from the outside edge towards the center using your tool rest as a guide. With all lines drawn you can use a compass at various distances from the edge to get the curve you want for the scallops.
Here is a template for scallops but it will only work if the plate is an exact circumference.

If I wanted to make a plate like this on the lathe I would just draw a line every 10 degrees, draw a template for one segment between two points, cut it out and trace the other 11 segments.

Try adult coloring books from any craft store. Also check out pyrography books.

There are some free CAD programs like QCAD that will allow you to lay out radial lines at any angle and design or adapt your own patterns and print them to scale. I use QCAD on Linux (it is also available for windows) to lay out Celtic knots for platters, bowls, and goblets for burning. I also use it to create 'graph paper' for laying out and designing 'basket illusion' patterns.

I find that limiting myself to using the lathes built in indexing has worked so far, but if I continue making these items I will probably make a more flexible index wheel that will allow me to attach a printed disk with any arbitrary number of points created with the QCAD system.

I do like laying out the lines on the lathe to keep them centered.
