    Redwood Burl Demilune Table

I made this recently for a Charity Auction. The top is a beautiful piece of Redwood Burl that I picked up several years ago and was waiting for the perfect project. This was that project. The piece was scorched around the edges and had obviously been in a fire, forest or otherwise.

The rough piece was kind of half moon shaped to start with, which is what gave me the idea, I just cut the Demilune shape out of it. First I had to fill a rather large inclusion with epoxy. Next I routed a fairly large chamfered edge all around, top & bottom, sanded it to 400 grit, grain filled it (clear), then sprayed it with 8 coats of Behlen Smooth Coat lacquer. Finally, I rubbed it out with Pumice & Rottenstone an applied 2 coats of Black Bison Natural paste wax.

The legs were cut out of a single billet of local Indiana Ash (I am saddened by the loss of the Ash trees, such wonderful wood), cut and tapered before I planed a gradual chamfer on each edge so that I ended up with an octagon at the bottom. I applied a custom dye blend to go with the color of the Redwood, I then sprayed a couple of light coats of Tiger Flake shellac to seal the dye before wiping on several coats of Behlen Master Gel.

I was very happy with the way it turned out and got many complements at the Charity Event. Plus it raised a nice amount at the auction, for a very good cause.

1" White Oak dowels that I made. And the legs are straight, no angle. I thought straight was more elegant.

Stunning indeed. Very unusual to use a slab with such a delicate design, but it works magnificently.

Yes, it is elegant. Good of you to help them, hope it brings you some good commissions. That design would lend itself to some cloth swags hung from "bottom of top" for holidays and such.

That's gotta be one of the most beautiful pcs of burl I have ever seen. Nice use of it - elegant leg design. Ever seen fiddleback redwood? the waves are 2" wide.
