I have a few windows that do not stay open any more and need to replace the springs for a lack of a better word. The windows are probably from the 1970's or a little later. Not sure. There is no name on the windows and I have no idea what they are. They are double pane insulated windows.

I am looking for the spring that holds the window up or a replacement that can work. The tube for the spring is 18" in length and has a helix sort of spring. I have included a couple photos to help identify.

Any suggestions as to where to look would be appreciated. Thanks..

They are called window balances and any glass shop can change them for you

    John,

A Google search using "window balances" as a search item resulted in many sources including HD.

Have not checked any utube sites but when I had the window down to take those photos it looked too simple. I am thinking there has to be a catch. Will have to take one over to HD and see what they say. Thanks.

You will also commonly find them called spiral balances (for obvious reasons) or tube balances. Blaine window hardware is a great online source for that kind of thing. There are a million different sizes and mounting configurations so they can be a little tricky to find.

It is very easy. I got two from HD for one window. In thirty minutes they were both replaced.
