    For bowl you can buy a 2X8 and cut it into sections. You can glue two together for a 3" deep bowl 7.5" diameter.

    I sometimes glue up 2 X4's and rip them into 3 x 3 blanks for practice or experimenting with form. Make sure to joint both surfaces flat before gluing, or they may come apart on the lathe at speed.
