Wood ID? What do you think?

A friend just gave me this 3" wide (future tool handle) trunk that is heavy enough to be an ironwood.

    Anybody recognize it?

I'm not sure if you even have it out there, but maybe Mountain Laurel?

Here is a piece that I'm sure is Mountain Laurel. It is real hard and heavy. It turns and smooths real well. If you use a nice sharp smoothing plane on it the surface shines almost like a polished stone.

Andrew, although it is not manzanita, that is a good guess. Manzanita has a thinner bark. That Mountain Laurel looks just like it.

If it is mountain laurel it would be fantastic for handles.
