Figured Walnut Platter - 29" diameter

I just finished of this 29" figured walnut platter it a continuous curve about 1" deep in the center. Started off with a 2" thick plank. It is finished with satin polyurethane. It was a bit big for my photo booth so I took a picture on the deck to give the relative size of the railing.

That's huge - - the size of a wagon wheel. Nice turning.

What lathe did you turn it on?

A guy in our woodturning club was retiring from business so he sold me several pieces that are 30" wide that were targeted for countertops. I still have 2 pieces that are about 6' long but have cracks and other features but I will get a few of more platters out of them.

Wow, that's beautiful! Just curious...what's to keep it from warping?

Gorgeous piece of Walnut! Wow. But sorry I'm having a hard time making out any depression at all. In the picture it just looks like one big smooth slab. Maybe next time create some kind of definition between rim and bowl? Or create a defined bowl with sharper entry from the rim. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe a different angle of photo would show the platter form better. I agree that the top down picture doesn't really show form very well

That is simply spectacular. It's a fantastic piece of wood, and a wonderful presentation.

I turned it over 2 days. The back first and then the front. Since the wood was quite dry to start with, it didm't warp much. Now that it is finished, it does change shape with the humidity changes.

That is possibly the prettiest piece of walnut I've ever seen, and you did a great job on it.
