Valspar Anti rust Armor clear gloss

I' v e used Olympic Fast hide oil based paint deep tint base for exterior wood projects where I wanted a clear gloss finish. It works surprisingly well but seems to be discontinued.

Lowes now carries Valspar Antirust Armor in a clear tint base. Has anyone used it without any pigment?

I'm looking for a clear finish for a pine porch ceiling and looking at Sikkens Cetol door and window as well. I was thinking that I could coat the back side with something cheaper and the figures if it works well enough maybe the whole project.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Dan

Exterior timber is a recommended use so it should work ok. It is reasonably high in volume solids so it should also give you good coverage. I only have issue with clear bases when paint suppliers try to use them as a base for everything and they just don't work for deep colours. Not a problem for you so I would give it a go. I'm not so keen on cetol. Too much maintenance as you have to re coat every year. It is what I am stuck with on the house I am working on. It is a long project and I have already had to re apply cetol before the house is even finished. Cheers

Look at SW's A-100 exterior WB acrylic deep base. Folks at WoodNet report excellent long term durability.

    Hi, John,

Does it dry to a clear finish if not tinted?

    Thanks, Dan

Yes, it dries clear, like varnish.
