Winchester Planes

I just returned from a working vacation in Hannibal, Mo, where my wife and I were working on a volunteer church construction project. While on these trips, we dabble around in antique/junk stores. I saw two hand planes marked 'Winchester' They appeared to be identical to Stanley Bailey planes with the exception of the Winchester logo on the chip breaker and the blade. They wer numbered as Stanleys were, one being a #5 and the other #6. I have never seen this brand before. Can anyone tell me about these hand planes?

Hi Stan,

These were made by Stanley for Winchester, I believe.

They may even be 'Bedrocks', the high featured Stanley plane. If they're a K5, K6, that's what they are. Stanley made these for Winchester and rebadged them

Actually, both Stanley and Sargent made planes for Winchester.

If the model numbers begin with "3" (3004, 3008. etc.) then it was made by Sargent.

If the number begins with "W" (W004, W008, etc.) then it's a Stanley. Some of the "W" models (not all) are early-type Bedrocks.

Either way, they're well made planes, and some folks do have a collector interest in them.

Bump to top 8 year old post.

I saw my first Winchester plane in a shop last week. They were #5's. Asking price was $95. They were in very good but used shape. Just wondering if they are worth $95 or if that was over the top price. Not interested in buying them just seeking info for general knowledge.

I would call that over the top, but some one who has a fancy collection of old Winchester fire arms might pay that much just to have it in with their other Winchesters.

Yeah, the problem with Winchester planes is that people want them for the name so they bring a high price. You can get the equivalent plane in a Keen Kutter Kx (where x is a number) for less money.

Agreed with the last two posts. I run across Winchesters quite a bit, and they're all marked up for the wrong reason.

I believe it was in the 1920's that Winchester came out with a whole line of tools mostly for woodworking.

Winchester did not actually make any of them.
However, when they went to suppliers they usually picked the highest quality.

I got $116.00 for a run of the mill Winchester drawknife on ebay. I think there are collectors of Winchester stuff who have blank spots on their walls so I'd ebay the planes.

I was given a Winchester Block plane as a gift ..





Its not in great shape. Is it worth fixing up ?

I'd clean it up and use it. That's a stanley knuckle cap block plane.
