    Hi John, The first choice is Brazilian Rose wood, ideally at least an inch thick. From responses in this thread Bolivian Rosewood Indian Rosewood, I think Stanley used Cocobolo at times. Often there are chunks broken off that need to be rebuilt, those can be in the range of 1" thick by 1.5" long some smaller some bigger. To make an entire tote/handle I assume one would need a piece about a 6-7" x 6-7" x 1" (I would have to get out my tape measure

    The old ones are Brazilian which is unobtainium commercially. You can get one in pretty good shape on Ebay for around $20-30 -- about the same as a whole beater plane come to that -- so that's your point of not-worth-fixing. Be sure to get one of the larger ones with the bolt hole in the front. sh
