    Veneer for bent wood rings?

I am experimenting with the process where you boil veneer, wrap it a coil, let it dry, and glue it together to make a ring.
I only have two veneers; a curly maple and a mappa burl. Figured the maple was the better bet.
In a few places it kinda creaked around the bend rather than flexing. I wonder what wood might be better for this?

I actually made a ring, but I am less then thrilled with it.
