What Method Do You Use To Capture Web Videos? (NYW)

I have been collecting on-line woodworking videos for my own use for years. I had been using a product called RIPTIGER to capture them and was very happy with it until I had to reinstall it and discovered that they appear to be out of business (or at least their support team is). I can't reinstall without the required installation codes even though I paid for the product. I liked RIPTIGER because you didn't have to select the portion of the screen you want to record. You just start RIPTIGER and play the video. It captures it and converts it to an MP4 file.

Now that RIPTIGER doesn't work, I am looking for a new way to capture my online videos. I tried the trial version of SNAGIT and EZVID but they are "screen capture programs" and you have to select the portion of the screen you want to record, start the video, stop the capture when the video is over, and manually save the file. Lots of manual work required. I have tried other "screen capture programs" but they all require this manual intervention to grab the video.

What product and method are you using and would you recommend it?

I use aTube Catcher. Easily captures music as well as videos. Remembers the last format and location you used which can be good or bad. I use version 3.8.9024. Sometimes the updates are buggy, but each update is a separate install file, so if you save each update version, you can uninstall and reinstall the previous version. It will also convert formats. It is freeware. Just looked at the website and there is no link to older versions, but I'd recommend it.

Depends on where you are downloading them from. If from YouTube, there are plenty of very simple rippers. I usually use savefrom.net. http://en.savefrom.net/1-how-to-download-youtube-video/

Using Firefox for a browser, an extension called Video DownloadHelper works great for me.

I use clipconverter.cc ..... it's free and easy to use...you copy the url of the webpage you are on and paste it into clip converter page and just select the format (avi, mp4, etc.) you want to convert the video to..

Also, again not knowing where you're getting your videos, you can often right-click on the video and select "Save Link As".

I don't save the videos anymore, I just save the link as a favorite. Doesn't use up storage space on my computer. Occasionally a link quits working, but very infrequently. I did burn most of the David Marks videos to DVD directly from the cable channel years ago. Most of those are now online I believe.

RIPTIGER was grabbing them at 640x480 and SNAGIT was capturing at 760x520. You have to do it each week when they play a new episode starting every Wednesday. You can't download from their archives.

Have any of you used your method to capture NYW?

You can't do that with NYW as they use FloPlayer.

I think I may have found an easy solution from all your input and would like to pass it on to those who are still in the dark. I use Google Chrome and found a browser extension on the Google Store called Video Downloader Pro. It installs a small icon on the Chrome tool bar that you click when you are on the website showing the video. It will list all available videos from that page which you select the appropriate one, and it downloads to your downloads folder in 640x480 at 29 fps. It is also available for other browsers too. Thanks for the help.

Nope, sorry. I have the whole run that I downloaded many years ago and burned to DVD.

Oops, may have spoken too soon. This extension works well with the New Yankee Workshop web site but not with YouTube.

+1 for clipconverter. It works flawlessly, AND it isn't a program to install!
