WoodRiver Leg Vice Hardware (1-1/4" Screw)

    Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has used the WoodRiver 1-1/4" Screw to build a vice for their workbench. I am getting ready to build a leg vice and saw this in Woodcraft last week. I thought it looked plenty substantial for my purposes. I have also looked at the Benchcrafted hardware, but cost and quality seem a little overkill for my retrofit vice project. This isn't going to be a super high end build. Thoughts?

    Thank you,

    Jon

Is that twice as good as the 1-1/8" vise screw from Lee Valley?

The price is twice as much.

Just an FYI, I have also seen some guys (mainly on Youtube) that use a scaffold leveling screw for their leg vise. He explains the piece around the 1:00 min mark

I am using three of the Lee Valley screws on my bench. The larger diameter Wood River one may have fewer turns per inch which would be an advantage.

The LV screw works very well. And the price is very reasonable!

Home Depot has different varieties of these one is a scaffold leveling screw for ~$30:

The other is called an adjustable stem jack at ~$20:

From all my exposure to scaffold screws, the are not machined very well and there is a lot of slop in the nut. I would not use one unless it was a bench that would live outside all the time.

Having watched the video, and seen both of the links,I'd get a real vise screw. Jim's post pretty well sums it up: The scaffold vise looks to me like it was not machined at all,but was formed from heavy gauge tubing and galvanized. Fits are sloppy.I'm not sure what the "nut" is made of. Might be aluminum???

If money is a real issue, the scaffold screw might work for a while until a real, properly made and machined vise screw could be obtained.
