So, I was browsing online and noticed that there are people (Chinese, mostly) selling HSS bars in a large variety of sizes (though not lengths...) for very modest prices. They don't actually say what kind of steel they're selling other than that it's HSS.
I got a couple just to see what they were like and they do seem to be high speed steel. They're fairly hard and don't burn on the grinder. I ground one into a scraper and made a quick handle for it from crepe myrtle. I made it small 'cause I've already got a lot of scrapers with big handles (not that I don't have small ones too, but whatever):

So, how's it cut? Great. How's the edge retention? Haven't really used it enough to be sure, but it seems to be about what you'd expect. I'll report back after I've had a chance to form a more solid opinion on that.
Anybody else tried these Chinese HSS bars from eBay/Amazon? Other questions or observations are welcome of course.
