Plan of attack for Bolo knife handle replacement

I purchased this WWI medical corpsman knife about a year ago with the intent of replacing the handle. There were two issues that I didn't fully understand when I purchased it.

    1. The tang of the knife is tapered.
    2. The original handle was made from a single piece of wood.

    Overall before:

    Showing the tapered tang.

    Tang without the handle

I'm looking for some help with a plan of attack, order of operations, on building a new handle. I am planning on making it from two pieces. One of my main concerns would be fitting the tapered tang. Thanks

I would not replace the handle. Repair the existing one and keep it all original. Use matching timber and some modern glue, preferably epoxy. Even if it broke getting it off, still glue it back together. For me the first rule of restoration is keep everything as original as possible. Cheers

I agree with Wayne. If it's not practical to remove the rivets and save and reuse you can fit around them. A bit tedious but worthwhile.
