    A Different Kind of Cheeseboard

So a couple months before Christmas, a friend asked me to make some cheeseboards. Nothing fancy...just a few gifts. So I did. Flatwork....yuk.

    But I had an idea.

So I took one of the cheeseboards and chopped it up and re-glued the pieces together in a checkerboard pattern...then embedded it into a 2" thick piece of cherry.

Then I let the wood show me the way.

    Here's how it turned out.

Walnut...Maple...Cherry....finished in Orange Oil and beeswax

love it! very clever. I always hate how the crackers slide off of the flat boards and end up using a bowl.

That is really quite spiffy. It really stands apart from other mitered, segmented turnings.

Very creative. It's a good way to integrate the dreaded "flat" work into your turning.

Great original idea. Ptacticle and unique. Nice job turning flatwork.

Thanks everyone for all your kind words.
It really was a lot of fun. It'll make a nice surprise gift for someone.
Pretty easy though. Maybe even easier than a bowl.

Thats true Mel. The checkerboard is all end grain so knife marks are minimalized
Nice feature and impressive that you called that out

    Very handsome!

What is the overall diameter, and the diameter of the checkerboard inset?

    Thanks!
