    Smile Salvaged Maple Bowl 3

This is the third bowl turned from a dead sugar maple Colleen and I found while snowshoeing.

    Sugar maple, 12 1/2” (318mm) diameter x 3.75” (95mm) high x 5/16” (8mm) thickness. Sanded to 320 and finished with Mahoney’s Walnut Oil.

    Hey, Steve,
I see what looks like black staining. Since you found the tree dead, could that be spalting? I'm not familiar with sugar maple.

I like this one the goodest, Steve.
    I also like popcorn.
    They should go together.

George, yes, a lot of the wood was spalted and the black lines running through the bowl are zones created by the fungus that was slowly eating the wood. Most of the standing wood was too far gone to use but a small section close to the ground had enough wood for 4 bowl blanks.

The sugar maple we have up here is known for being very light blond in color and having a lot of curl as well as being our source of maple syrup. I love turning it, easy to cut, holds detail and loves to take color.
