Not a good day at the shop

I now am in favor of executing people who throw oil soaked rags in the trash.Fire 2.jpg

    Ouch,

Sorry to see that, Rick. I hope you are well insured.

I have located 5 woodworkers who are willing to serve as the firing squad.

    That really, REALLY sucks.

Nobody hurt? That's the good part. Remember that the things in the shop are just stuff, YOUR STUFF! They are replacable.

Spoke with Fire Marshall tonight and learned there may be more to this than meets the eye.
There seems to be a question about how the entire floor could spontaneously burst into flames all at once.

About 28 years ago, my wife was in the hospital after giving birth to my first child. My father in law and I were home alone. I had just completed a couple maple model bases for architectural models and had finished them with Watco Danish Oil. I had thrown the oily tee shirts in the kitchen trash can and other garbage on top of the pile. About 12:30 that night my smoke alarm was going off and the kitchen trash can was smoking. Spontaneous combustion is a real thing...so is young, dumb and stupid. If I recall Watco had weathered some law suits caused by spontaneous combustion of oily rags, even thought they have or had a disclaimer on their can about product flammability. So, a Justrite safety can sits in the shop now for these things...

    Oh Man, Rick,

I was thinking about fire just the other day when I was using Mineral Spirits to clean shipping grease off of my table saw (stored it for a year). I've always draped rags over the side of the trash can overnight. It was habit before. Now I'm reminded of why.
