Weed Vase Inspired by Jake Brubaker

I visited the granddaughter of a former local woodturner and was shown through her collection of his work. I was inspired to turn a "Weed Vase" as he called them. It is black walnut, 9" tall with a 1" diameter base and a little over 1/8" diameter stem.

I would not call it a weed pot. Looks to be a challenge to turn. Nicely done.

Very nice! Does the borehole go the 9" depth? Do you support the length of it in any way during the turning of the stem since it's so delicate? I think it is very nicely done.

The hole goes down about 1 inch. I held one end in 4 jaw chuck and used the tail stock to hold the other end. That way there is no horizontal pressure on the piece you are turning. I tried it between centers, but even the slightest horizontal pressure results in serious vibration for the stem.

Looks like a quill holder with the feather in the stem. Neat.
