    Can Butternut take paint?

I'm making some cabinet doors and the only wood right now I can get my hands on is Butternut.
    I'm planning on painting them.

    Will Butternut take paint?

I don't see why not. Its not a resinous wood.

Sand w/100 grit + oil based primer.

Sure it will. Butternut is pretty much identical to walnut in characteristics...including grain/pore patterns.

Of course, it can be a painful thing to cover up beautiful wood like butternut with paint... Can't you find maple locally? It's a more closed grain wood, too, so your paint finish will likely be smoother.

    Ok -thanks for the info.
I'll pass on the Butternut and keep looking.

How about Poplar? It's a classic wood for painted furniture and around here it's cheap.
