These are made from the very dry and crispy Ash, which made for a lot of do-overs on the details and more than average sanding.
These are made with the lower center-of gravity, which proves to be a little less desirable for artistic critique and more desirable for the pastors who are holding them.
The wide grain of the Ash was chosen by the pastor I made them for because it can be seen easily as wood-grain from 10 to 50 feet away - the viewing distance of the congregation. They are meant to be as sturdy as an Ash baseball bat (made for an Angels fan) and last for decades. I do not plan on using the same board for any more turnings because of its crispy, crunchy dryness, but I will use other Ash in the future.
Low gloss finish from dewaxed shellac, 6+ coats of wipe-on Poly, and waxed (except for the insides of the cups) with Liberion.
