Installing Barrel hinges

Hi,

I am half-way through making a small box for my father's conducting baton. Following his service in WW2, he spent the remainder of his life pursuing music, and was a conductor for many, many years. My brother is going to take the baton, and use it on the sparse occasions that he conducts his church orchestra.

The box is basically an enlarged pen box, cut from one piece of 8/4 cherry. I am going to use barrel hinges for the mechanism, but I have never used them before. I know that I will need to cut the back edges at a 45 degree angle to allow for opening the box, but I am unsure how far in from the edge to drill the hinge holes, and how much of a relief I will need. I am going to use 10mm barrel hinges.

If you have used these before, I'd like to hear what you could offer in way of suggestions.

I've always set barrel hinges much like I would dowels. I've never had a problem. You also don't need much of a 45 on the back, more like a chamfer. I always center them in the stock. Hope that helps.
