Jim, the 2 that I have came along with some other planes as a package and reduced the cost of the ones I wanted so not much invested. When you say single iron you mean no chip breaker, correct. I might put them up for sale or just re purpose the furniture as the knob and tote are in very good shape.

Far right #3...Stanley Defiance. Early models.....later ones were more like Handyman plane. I think this is from the 1930s era.

Diamond Edge for the other? lateral level doesn't look like a Millers Falls style. Maybe one from Estes?

Never seen a Defiance. I have one of the Handyman #4s. Decent plane, but nothing like the earlier Stanleys. Sharp blade solves a lot of ills with a plane,I've heard of the Eclipse somewhere.

Good find Rick, I think the #5 is later than a type 8. Bailey wasn't added to the casting until type 9. Unless you somehow found a rare prototype.

Thanks Jim and your right the flow cart I used did nit mention Bailey in the casting but it did mention patent dates on the lateral adjuster, so Type 9 it is and I wont complain for 15 bucks!

Some of the early type 9 planes still have a patent date on the adjusters. They should also have two '02 patent dates on the base casting.

Here is an old post of mine that is likely just as confusing and erroneous as anything else out there:

This the same frog that I have on my plane.
It is my understanding that when they came out with a new type the used all the parts that fit from inventory.

This stuff was from yesterdays trip.
    IMG_2767[1].jpg
    Stanley #5C Type 19
Craftsman #4 size W/plastic furniture and corrugated sides.
Craftsman #3 size wooden furniture iron was never used but the chip breaker was used in it's place!
Cost of the 3 planes 20$
    Yankee 130A and the Dunlap/Germany 2 for 5$
Everything else was a buck each.

Hope everyone has a great 4th of July
    Rick

The 5C is my favorite of the planes I own. Nice finds.
