    Upgrading filter for jet dc1100

As I posted earlier, I'm getting some fine dust in the air when running my dust collector.

I'm looking at two possible updates to the filter--either a canister filter from wynn or an ovsersized singed felt bag from AFF. (I currently have the stock canister filter that comes with the jet). id be interested in anyone's experience or research with these options

    Matthew,

I use a ClearVue 5 hp cyclone with two of these Wynn filters:

    NANO Filter Specs:
    Model: 9B300NANO
    MERV Rating: 15
    Efficiency: 99.999% at .5 micron
    12.75" OD x 34" x 8.4" ID (300 sq. ft.)

These work extremely well on the exhaust of the cyclone and put almost nothing back into the air as checked by a Dylos particulate air quality monitor.

However, I wonder if filters like these would clog up quickly if used on your Jet. The cyclone dumps almost everything in the bin before the air even gets sent to the exhaust filters, from big chips to fine dust. Sorry, I don't have experience with the bag type dust collectors.

I'm running the 1100CK and not getting any dust out. Is everything sealed? When I first started using it I failed to correctly seat the bag and got blow by

I have been using these singed felt bags from AFF for years and find little exhaust dust around the bags. 1HP two stage and about 50 sq ft if I remember correctly( built this thing over 30 years back).Dust Bags.JPG

I'd get the Wynn Nano filter. If you aren't using a separator yet you should look into adding it soon to help protect and extend the life of the filter

    Matthew,

The human eye would have a hard time seeing particles under 10 microns. If you have the standard 2 micron filter and are observing fine dust then going to 1 or 0.5 micron is not the solution. Although the problem may coincidentally go away when you install another filter with different gasket material or clamping.

Have you had this system long, has the filter been seasoned? If so, and you are seeing dust with your current system, then I would look for a potential leak.

    Hope that helps,

    Carl

    Thanks for the input.

I don't see dust in the atmosphere, but I definitely sense it (smell and slight eye irritant) when the dust collector is running, even when I'm not cutting wood.

One alternative hypothesis is that the air blown over the dust collector might be disturbing nearby dust and getting that into the air.

Seeing a single spec is one thing, seeing thousands as in the case of airborne dust is a different story.

I can see tobacco smoke just fine ;-)

    Matthew,

I remember your post now about the 'smell' when turning on your DC. One way you can determine where the source is (filter or not) is to remove the filter, run your DC. Then wait 30 minutes for everything to settle and run it again. If the smell is gone then you know something is in the filter. I had an old vacuum that had a smell to it that I had to take the vacuum apart and clean the blades and housing to reduce the smell. There must of been residue in the hose and other parts I could not clean to completely eliminate the smell.

If you still smell it after the filter is off try removing the intake hose/pipe to eliminate that source. You might want to cover part of the intake with tape or some blockage as running the DC without filter or intake pipe will likely over heat the motor (it will be free without restrictions).

Glenn - you can see smoke just like you can see hail. But can you see humidity? Smoke is visible because you are seeing clumps of smaller particles. If you search for what the human eye can see you will find 10-30 microns is typical under good high contrast conditions. There are many references to this but this post actually has the explanation of why- https://biology.stackexchange.com/qu...an-eye-can-see

Hope this helps, please let us know what you find/do.

I have the DC-1100 and about two years ago I replaced the 30 micron bag with the Wynn cannister. For about $100 it is one of the best purchases I have made.

Exactly. The dust we are seeing are friendly groups of bad stuff. With my current cataracts (surgery next month) I'm lucky I can see the text on the page. Commas and periods at 11pt often get misread ;-)

Have you tried enlarging text with your browser? Ctrl-"+" on this win 10 computer with Firefox. The comma will look like a tadpole.
