    Finishing spalted maple

I have a piece of spalted maple that I would like to make into a console/sofa table. I would love some advice on finishing this as I have worked with spalted maple before. I have a few different finishes sitting around from some previous projects. I have Target em8000 conversion varnish, em6000 wb lacquer, em9300 polycarbonate, watco teak and Danish oil, and frombys Tung oil. I will probably try and sell this so I think something durable but not plastic looking would be best. I used the Tung oil on some walnut shelves I made and loved the look but I don't know how well that would hold up to spills etc. Unfortunately I only have the one piece so I can't really do any test pieces.

    Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Use one of your clear lacquers. Don't over apply it - ie use the product reasonably thin - and it won't look plasticky. After your second coat, block it flat to get rid of the rolled edges of polish but not so flat the grain is filled. Then apply a thinned final coat. Cheers
