Sorry about your friend.
As for the rest, get back on the horse. You'll get it sorted.
Hope the thumb is healing fast.

Thumb lets me know when to stop...
Finished up a few things this morning..
IMG_1363 (640x480).jpg
Rebuilt the dovetail failure a little bit. The cut-out was cut in half, and re-used. Adds a few curves to the bottom of the case.
IMG_1364 (640x480).jpg
Got the last of these dovetail sockets chopped...drilled a few counter bores, and glue and screws to attach the walnut pieces...
IMG_1366 (640x480).jpg
Made this little piece...and had a better idea..
IMG_1367 (640x480).jpg
Less chopping, this way...this part was for between the upper two drawers..
IMG_1369 (640x480).jpg
Might be getting the hang of these things..the big picture?
IMG_1368 (640x480).jpg
Need to find the 3/8" plug cutter, and make a BUNCH of tapered plugs.....walnut, or Maple?
Stay tuned..
-
Depends the look you're going for. I think either would work, but I like the idea of Walnut, particularly if it is Black Walnut.
I know it looks good with maple, as I've used that combo before.
-
Worked on the top a bit....thought the hardest part was getting that Maple slab TO the shop....4/4 x 13-1/8" x 49" is a wee bit heavy.
Cut it down to a better length....wasn't quite wide enough for the case, though. Decided to try and plane the slab flat, and reduce the thickness a bit..
IMG_1374 (640x480).jpg
Hmmm, might be a bit too much to remove?
Went ahead and flattened the slab...
IMG_1375 (640x480).jpg
Then I marked a centerline....and also marked a large "X" across the line.
Clamped the slab to the bench, circular saw to make the rip cut. Jointer plane to joint the sawn edges.
Got a jig set up on the bandsaw, and cut 1" wide strips of that walnut. Got three. Pipe clamps and glue...stand the walnut strips on edge..
glued up.jpg
One strip down the center, one on each edge. Will need to plane the strips flush with the Curly Maple....and MAYBE add a Walnut edge on the ends.
shavings.jpg
Made a mess on the floor.
Letting the top cure overnight..no rush. Still need to find that plug cutter...
Stay tuned..

Top looks good! The Maple is beautiful. And the Walnut.

IF this is getting a bit too long-winded of a post, let me know....
Top was finished up today..
IMG_1381 (640x480).jpg
Set up this strange contraption, to make a sliding dovetail joint...
IMG_1386 (640x480).jpg
Well, at least this part of it, anyway. Grooved both ends...then dug out a funny looking table..
IMG_1388 (640x480).jpg
To make the part that slides into the groove.....took a few tries to get things the right size..
IMG_1389 (640x480).jpg
Slid it home with a small bead of glue
IMG_1391 (640x480).jpg
Hand planes to match things for thickness. rounded the corners with a sander. Set the top aside..
IMG_1396 (640x480).jpg
Dug up some pine scraps, and made a few parts..
IMG_1397 (640x480).jpg
To allow me to attach the top...
IMG_1393 (640x480).jpg
Still hunting for that plug cutter....I think I know where it was stashed from the last episode...
Starting to look like a .....something or other...
Stay tuned.....drawers may be on the next episode?
-
May start a new thread, and tell about the drawers for this thing....a few more pictures here, then sart a new chapter? Getting a bit long-winded..hard to read?
Hauled a few boards to the shop.
side boards.jpg
Laid out a few drawer fronts. The rest of that pile will be for sides.
I even found that Veritas 3/8" Tapered Plug Cutter, and made a few plugs..
plugged.jpg
Needed 13...I always cutter a couple extras....fat fingers tend to lose a plug....DAMHIKT...
Top two fronts were sized to the opening..
close up.jpg
Kept an eye on the grain. Next blank down? Turned out to be Poplar.., So I moved it aside, and moved the next two boards up, one space..
One was sized to the opening, without too much hassle..
number 3.jpg
But the one after that had "issues"
number 4.jpg
In that a part wanted to split off. Went ahead and split it off, added a layer of glue and a clamps. Not sure IF this will be the show side, or..
back side.jpg
This side.. I found ONE more Maple board....was long enough, just a hair too narrow...we have ways..
number 5.jpg
Will be the bottom drawer. Not sure how much will remain of that Walnut strip..yet.
Maybe after errands tomorrow, I can work on the sides of the drawers? May start a new thread for the Drawer build....maybe..?
Stay tuned..
-
Looking good, still.
As for the thread, it's working just fine. But a thread on the drawers would probably benefit others that come later. I am trying to find instruction/information on basic furniture building; I bet most new guys are. And drawers are part of that, so....
-
What to do..part two has been started....not the best of start ups.....normal luck in the Dungeon Shop.
Thanks for following along on this thread, see you all at Part Two.
( IF anyone wants to show up and tune an old Craftsman Bandsaw....)
