    Rattle can finish

Looking for suggestions for a rattle can finish. I was asked to repurpose a head/footboard into a bench. Youve seen these projects.....the material was my grandparents original bed from the 40's. I plan to repaint it (rattle spray) and was wondering if a finish is necessary over the paint and if so, what. I prefer to keep it simple like a rattle can but am open to other suggestions. The actual bench part will be a hardwood, probably oak (have plenty on hand) and will be finished separately. Im just looking for finish options over paint for the main frame which is the original headboard and footboard. Thanks!

There's little reason to top coat the paint if you coat it correctly, but if you do decide to do so, be sure that the clear spray you choose is compatible with the paint it's going over...stick to the same brand, if at all possible, and confirm with the manufacturer that they are compatible.
