Stanley #88 Clapboard Marking Gauge.
It's amazing how many tools we have invented to help us avoid measuring. Pretty cool.

Was it used to measure the overlap?
No -- it was (is) used to gauge correct length at which to cut clapboard so that it butted up against corner board.

The Stanley 89 (also pictured) is used to gauge overlap.
Thanks Joe!
Thanks. I kind of doubt I'll ever have need for it and it probably isn't valuable enough to bother with ebay. Hmmm... more things in the pile....
