    Gated wye ShopVac hose

Anybody cobbled together a gated wye for "Shop-vac" 1.25" ID, 1.5" OD corrugated hose?

Please note-I already been all over Google, Amazon, and Shop-Vac site, and I don't need something made for industrial pressures.

The deal is to enable my little vacuum under grinder bench to service all the grinders-wyes in the system w gates @ machines would be great.

I suppose I can cut and splice the hose or get pvc for the wyes.

    What about the gates?

    Thanks guys, D

I have a Rubbermaid bin full of old shop vac hoses and fittings somewhere out in the shed. After a couple of years of sub-optimal franken-hose attempts I changed my approach. I bought 2-1/2" hose which fits a wide array of off-the-shelf gates, wyes and so forth. The connection point solution being a fitting that converts from 2-1/2" to shop vac. This has freed me from all the odds and ends I used to cobble together.

To your specific requirement, my smaller bandsaw and DP vac is a good example. One of the Ridgid hose ends happened to fit the 2-1/2" hose so it remains as the connection point on this vac.

A short piece of 2-1/2" hose hits a wye which goes to the DP

    and the BS.

I gate at the tool for convenience; the vac is tucked into a bit of a hole that is troublesome to get to.

This interests me also, so I'm gonna Google.

So, like you said, plumbing PVC DWV (Thinwall pvc)1 1/4 or 1 1/2 wye and other fittings, and duct tape, or better.

For gates, .. maybe this and adapt to size...

Or... heres a neat idea - still need to adapt though..

Spendy but Look at this link CLOSELY for ideas...

    http://www.ultimategarage.com/shop/p...roducts_id=400

    Possibility..

    https://builtinvacuum.com/parts/all/outlet-cover/basic/

How bout just a cheap plumbing pvc cap you remove off the wye.. and plug on hose, to all act as a "Gate" ? maybe, but inconvenient.

    Look around here...

    http://www.nosawdust.com/index.htm

Clone this w BB ply, correct size pvc pipe, and epoxy ?.....

    https://www.grainger.com/product/1DY...170729154738:s

Getting closer now.. 1 1/2", but you would have to modify, OR mount w handle on underside,or wood dust will plug the bottom of slot....

    Same w this...

    https://www.amazon.com/Valterra-T100.../dp/B000BGM7LS

Heres another photo of a Valterra - I'm thinking if you remove the seals, and sand 1/4" or so from the bottom edge to expose the slot, it may work as a kinda self cleaner, but no guarantee.
If you leave the gaskets in, and it doesn't get lubed by liquid as in the use it's made for, it slides kinda tough after awhile.
Silicone spray fixes that, and is ok cause it's waste, and stays in the pipe.
Course you know about NOT getting silicone on projects, right ?
They use these most often as drains on RV waste tanks.
Also, if you go to Mfg site, they are available w various config's of connecting nipples..

That's all I found, I think a modded Valterra is your best bet.
Remember, you can get them w different hubs.

    And they're like $12.

Let us know how you progress, I'm sure some others are interested as I am. Marc

Thanks for that search, Marc.....You found way more than I was able to; still no gates that small

A woodworker on www showed his method of making a gate using PVC pipe and BB ply-already have all that.

Now, I'm considering making 4 Y fittings, just splicing the hose together to form a Y using a roll of plastic screening and epoxy (both of which I also already have). Such a technique is used in fiberglass casting all the time (instead of Plaster of Paris).

It a sure bet the finished cobbled together will be very ugly-but I will post picture (my main requirement is air-tight).

    Thanks, David

Now, that is very top-notch post; and a great idea. Better than my hillbilly approach.

Valterra stuff is available on Amazon.

Thanks Marc and Johnathan (for the original above).

DO NOT EVER use a vac with wood dust in it or in the hoses, for a grinder !!! A vac can catch fire and be like a jet engine in your shop. I ONLY use a dedicated large Delta shop vac with my Wilton belt grinder.

Are you aware that some home insurance companies will cancel your policy if they find out that you have a vacuum system? They are considered dangerous. Also,be sure that everything is GROUNDED. The hoses need a small copper wire run along the side of all hoses or exhaust piping,if it is rendered not grounded by use of plastic gates. Static is dangerous around fine wood dust, with a lot of oxygen running through it. I grounded EVERYTHING in my system.

    Thanks for that George
I have all the copper wire-just found this very point debatable so never grounded
Otherwise, yes, no hot metal goes into main system; have dedicated shop vac for that
