I have a panel saw like the top Disston Panel Saw. It is a Disston.
It was a dirty, broken handle saw. It is 8tpi.
I have cleaned as much grunge off that will come off. My saw has a nib like the top saw.
I filed the old teeth off. After filing new teeth, I sharpened and set the new teeth. I filed
it 8tpi crosscut. I made a new maple handle that is very close to the top saw.
The saw is well behaved, cuts quickly and is a pleasure to use. I filed it 8tpi as it was originally.
The saw plate is 22" long.

I think an interesting project would be to get a new saw plate and make a new panel saw.
I've built one Ron Bontz saw kit, maybe it's time to do another.

I don't know why I didn't post this picture. This is the saw I'm talking about. I had forgotten about this picture.

I did not know for a long time that Disston ever made panel saws.

I think I will buy a sawplate from Stewie and make a panel saw.

Making a saw handle seems like a a serious project in itself. I have a couple full size saws I've bought now that are missing the top horn, plan to one day make new handles for those.

I'm sure you are talking about your apprentice days. I bet you did make a lot.

The thing is, that for a recreational woodworker, a saw handle can be a challenge. He has to decide to use a band saw or not. Since I conveniently
consider a band saw to be an almost hand tool, I shape my handle blanks on it.

Making handle blanks with a coping saw is not my idea of fun woodworking.

I admire those of you that were apprentices.

Actually, I posted the picture because many of you knew that Disston has made plenty of panel saws, there is not a lot that have the tote shape that is on my saw.
