Now if they intro'd a custom 3, 6, or 8 then that would be news.

    I really don't need another 5 1/2. I have a 5 1/2 Stanley. It is a really sweet plane.
I also have a 3 that is my goto smoother.
I also have 604, 605 and 607 Bedrock planes. I went to a woodworking seminar one time and the
demonstrator had a Bedrock. I was taken with the plane and promptly acquired my herd.

The combination plane seems improved over the prototypes, the force from the handle appears more in line with the blade. I will have to see it in person. It does remind me of that expression "with brass knobs on!".

I think he means Rob's (Read: Veritas') tendency to come out with amazing tools that you can't help empty your wallet for.

As for the plane, the custom planes are excellent, I have a 4.5 (50 degree) and 5.5 (55 degree) set up for smoothing difficult grain. It was between these and Lie Nielsens, and the decision came down to a plane of the same high standard with a couple added innovations and a bit cheaper still (and I like to support Canadian manufacturing when possible so I'm a bit biased). No regrets.
