Coat #2 is dry and tack ragged off. 1st coat of a clear gloss poly is now on. waiting on it to dry enough that I can rub it out.

Trays were not working out the way I was looking for. Not enough thin material for the bottoms, nor enough for the sides....rather than cobble something together, and have it look bad (ugly) I decided to skip the trays....until I have better stock to work with.

Maybe later this evening...I can post a couple pictures of the completed box? Does anyone want the dimensions of the box?

    Which..leaves...that ....LARGE ...stash...of Maple...to build something out of....never ends...

Needed a gouge to make a detail.

    And the "Detail"

A place for a couple of fingers to rest, as they open a lid....
    IMG_1859 (640x480).jpg
Small hinges. Bottom panel is 1/2" thick Poplar.
    IMG_1862 (640x480).jpg
    Close the lid....
    IMG_1863 (640x480).jpg
    Front of the chest..
    IMG_1860 (640x480).jpg
    Hinge view...
    IMG_1864 (640x480).jpg
    One of the end views..

Chest measures: 9-1/4" tall. Front to back: 11", counting the finger rest in the lid... Side to side: 15-3/8" over the ends of the lid.

Mainly Black Walnut, case has Cherry Raised panels. Not too bad of a little project?

2 coats of Amber Shellac, then 1 coat of Clear Gloss Poly.

Looking good! I would never have thought to do the T&G joint on the corners.

Thank you. Used those instead of screws for quite a while now.

Given that it is a small chest and probably not subject to lots of stress, wouldn't the long grain to long grain joints be sufficient by themselves?

The tongue & groove helps align the joint, much like a biscuit would. Last thing I need is for the four corners to get squirrely on me while I am trying to clamp them all up. Have also used this type of corner on Blanket/Hope Chests.

    Alignment! Something I hadn't considered.
