Has "Bailey" behind the tall knob. No. 4 in front, with a ring around the base of the knob...

Seems to be a No. 4c model....

Lever cap has a "U" stamp. Lateral lever has STANLEY. Someone had set the frog way back...

Took a lot of turns of the frog adjust bolt to adjust..

Has a LARGE brass wheel. Knurling lines are straight.
Chipbreaker was on the bevel side....maybe they thought this was a bevel up plane...
Lever cap has the "Kidney Bean" shaped hole, instead of the older keyhole.
Handles are Rosewood.....and no sign of any cracks, or breaks....
Maybe after awhile I can get this cleaned up? Looks to be a Type 16? pre-1941?
Will post more as I get this cleaned up...is there a rush? No.

You got taken. I wouldn't have paid a penny over $12.50 - oh, but there was tax, that's right. Ya done well.

Is there a number stamped on the cutting iron? It will be three digits, the first one representing the quarter in which the iron was produced (1-4), the second and third the year. Usually - not always - when there's a production date stamp, the year of the iron is the year of the plane.

Seems to be a replacement iron...drat. Hour and a quarter of rehab....I am taking a break. Ok, here we go, may take more than one post...

Started out by tearing the plane down to just...parts...

I have a few sizes of cup brushes, and a wire wheel on the grinder...

The small bolts and washers were held with,,NOT my fingers, but a pair of visegrips....prevents parts from going airbourne...

Sole was actually flat! Cleaned the sides and the insides, along with the sole's grooves..

Got everything cleaned up....time to re-assemble the plane. Threads get a drop of light oil, before they are installed. Lateral lever was oiled and "worked" until it was moving nicely.

I did not touch the wood parts, as they were decent...I used the frog adjust bolt to set the frog. Previous owner had the frog set all the way back!

Used these for the iron and chipbreaker. Flattened the iron's back, redid the bevel. Chipbreaker took a while to get it to sit flat on the back of the iron. Was bowed up in the middle.
Sharpened to 2000 grit..

Adjusted the lever cap. Test drive showed I hadn't tightened the bolts to the frog...Ooops..
Had to take the stuff back off, and tighten the two bolts.....gave them an extra "tweak" for good measure..
Now, about the test drive? Stay tuned...

Ok, test drives....one in Maple showed the frog was loose. Fixed that, and tried a slab of Poplar..

Corners of the iron will need cut back a hair....Maybe I will go above 2K grit, and maybe strop the edge....?
