    Question plane mystery!

I just received a Sargent # 407 smooth plane. When I researched the specs for the plane the length of the plane was given as 7". The plane I have is definitely marked - 407, on the plane body and the lever cap. When I measured the plane it was 8" What gives??? If anybody out there has a clue about this I would greatly appreciate the info!
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,
    Pete Leyden

There are sometimes differences in the manufacturing process and even how the plane is measured. Some might not measure the casting under the tote.

One piece of information might be helpful. How wide is the blade?

Another thing that may help is pictures if you have a way to include them with a clear measuring device included.

Quoted lengths generally don't include the tab under the back of the tote. Even so, the 407 is a bit longer than 7".

That "7" is nothing more than the model number......just as a Millers Falls No. 7 is actually 8" long. And always was.
