    Craftsman hand power plane

Are there any cheap places to buy blades. Sears parts direct wants $36 plus shipping. Other blades you see are $10.00.

    Abbey,

Are you talking about standard bench planes, like the Stanley Bailey's?

If you are, I think most of the more standard planes from maybe 1920 or so on all take about the same type of iron (blade.)

Check the width of the iron. The Stanley #3 and #5&1/4 planes take a 1&3/4 inch wide iron. The Stanley #4 and #5 planes take a 2" wide iron. The Stanley #4&1/2, #6, and #7 planes take a 2&3/8 inch wide irons. Finally the #8 Stanley planes take a 2&5/8 inch wide irons. The Stanley #5&1/2 planes are an exception, as the early ones have a 2&1/4 inch wide iron, and the later ones have a 2&3/8 inch wide iron.

If you look on that auction site, you will see replacement irons for Stanley planes, both new and used. The big ones for the #8s are pretty pricey, but the common sizes for the #4s and #5s are often pretty reasonable.

Measure the width on the iron on your plane, and then look on the auction site for an iron that width. Make sure you compare the iron from your plane to the picture to make sure that they match. Search for "plane iron" and the Stanley plane number, IE: "Stanley 5 plane iron." Or, search for something like "Stanley Plane iron 2."

Also, some hardware and Big Box stores used to carry replacement irons for planes. If you get lucky you might find one, and some of those were pretty reasonable.

On the other hand,if you are talking about a true power plane, the type with an electric motor and a power cord, the replacement blades are likely to be expensive.

    Regards,

    Stew

    Howdy Abbey,

Your post title, "Craftsman Hand Power Plane" has me wondering exactly for which plane you are seeking a blade.
