For those who wonder what is meant by a defect 'telegraphing' through a coating, this picture is an example of how applying more coats does not hide a problem but rather magnifies it.

These are some M20 threaded bolts I grabbed at random out of a bucket of bolts we use in the shop to blank off threads that need protecting from paint. They have received multiple coats of paint over the past few months and as you can see, the thread pattern is still clearly visible. The layers of paint total in excess of 4mm in thickness. The lesson? Fix defects before you start coating/polishing your job. They don't go away if you ignore them. Cheers.
