    Identifying Wood Species

I buy my lumber from a saw mill rough cut and finish it myself. On my last trip--of many I have made-- the owner told me to feel free to go to the planing shop and take what I wanted from the scrap pile.

I latched on to some good pieces of walnut, red oak, white oak and popular but there were other species that I could not identify. Did not want to bother him to help me identify what I could not and I wonder if anyone knows a site that would help me learn to identify other species or is this somethin one acquires by simply being exposed to the many varieties?
