    Shellac as a Stain Retarder

I will be staining doors made from pine and want to avoid the blotchy look that is so easy to achieve with that wood.
I have never tried it, but heard you can use Shellac as a sealer coat prior to applying the stain.
    So my questions are:
    1. What pound cut?
    2. A single coat or multiple coats?
    3. Sand after or between coats?
    4. How long to wait after last coat of shellac before applying the stain?

Paul, yes I've tried that before with good results. Used a one pound cut, one coat, let dry overnight, rubbed down with 0000 steel wool and then went to the stain.

Make sure you use dewaxed shellac if you're going to put poly over the top.

Tom, I was going to apply marine varnish over the top, does it matter if it's dewaxed then?
