Cheap HPLV

Yes, cheap and HPLV in the same sentence is an oxymoron.

I have a small home shop, not professional, and probably never will be. Been trying to research an inexpensive spray system without paying much.

This comes about because the wife wants me to finish some doors in latex paint by spraying them. I see a woodworking tool buying oppurtunity!

From the little bit of research I have done, I see two possible contenders:

Tom, I have a Fine Spray 2000, and it does a pretty good job. But you do have to thin the material quite a bit. I don't think you could spray latex with it. I didn't see anywhere that you can buy a larger nozzle for it. Note also on the site that it says its for varnishes, shellacs, oils and urethanes. I did use it to spray some Ultima Oxford waterborne lacquer, and it worked very well.

I bought mine at Lowes, and it was $97 on sale.

I'd worry about thinning latex that much, though; you would probably have to make a 50% water / latex mix to get it through the drip cup in the amount of time they recommend.

I've wanted something similar so this thread is of interest to me also. If you search pricegrabber for Wagner Fine Spray, you'll find a couple of places have it under $100 including shipping.

Note that I have no familiarity with either of the listed vendors.

Whatever you buy, I hope you'll give us all a report/review.

I bought the Astro HVLP DX3 for about $80.00. Haven't used it but its a nice-looking gun. They have a lot of info to help in choosing a good gun in different price ranges for woodworking.

tom, if you've already got an air compressor, check out this one that jim becker recommended. i've used it to spray water based conversion varnish by TARGET as well as latex. whatever you decide, make sure that you CLEAN the gun well between jobs!

If you already have an air compressor, look at the conversion guns. I bought the Porter Cable PSH1 gravity feed gun and have been very satisfied with it (for spraying lacquer, shellac, etc.). You can get a 2mm nozzle kit for it (part number PTA22) for latex. Amazon has the gun on sale right now for $70 and the 2mm nozzle is about $25.

I've not used the PSH1 to shoot latex - only thinner stuff like lacquer.

If you havnt purchased your gun yet- look at Harbor Freight. They have a 1.7 for about 49.95 and there are some coupons out there for another 20 per cent off.
I got one and it seems to spray latex real well. I thin the latex by 10 percent and away we go.
