Thread: Random Carriage Return?

    Random Carriage Return?

Has anyone else been getting random unintended carriage returns when typing a post? For the past few weeks or more, there have been a number of times that I've hit the <Space> key and gotten a <Return> instead. I've ruled out keyboard misfires, since I'm seeing it on two separate computers. I don't know if it's something that could be happening in the browser, or the forum software. I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.3 on both machines.

    Anyone else getting similar stuff?

    Vaubhn,

I posted awhile back about about the delete key not working. Same sort of error, every once in awhile it would just stop working. Happens both at home and at work. My guess is that it is the forum software.

This happens with FireFox when you type a bit in a vBulletin forum, click elsewhere for something and then return to your post. It's a browser quirk. I have it happen both here and in an adoption forum I participate in.

I'm using FF 1.5.0.3 as well. For me, the thing is that every once in a while the cursor vanishes while writing a post and it takes some hefty carpet bombing with my index finger to get it to return.

FireFox also stopped working with "ALT" characters in the last few releases in the vBulletin forums as well as with Blogger. I have to use IE for the latter when making posts in order to use proper quotes, etc. These are the only two situations where I've had this issue, however.

Ah Ha! So that explains why suddenly I can no longer use Alt 248 to get the degree symbol.

Yup...I find it frustrating, 'cause I naturally use a lot of ALT-characters for "correct" typography. What can I say? I'm anal...

Thanks Jim...nice to know I'm not the only one seeing it. I do a lot of window hopping, so your explanation nailed it. Also good to know the reason for the ALT character disappearance I'd also noticed. I just thought I was going dain bread.

Where can I get a list of characters available using ALT?

A Google search of "ALT characters for Windows" gives this lovely link, kindly supplied by my alma mater....

Hold down the ALT key and then type the four digit code of the character you want on the NUMERIC KEYPAD of your keyboard.

Testing IE: ° degree, ± plus or minus, ÷ division, it scares me when Windows works.
