How to reply to a quote?

I have noticed that when I click on reply that the complete post shows up. Some of you guys like Jim, Ken and Kevin single out a sentence or even a word to reply to. It's probably something simple that I am missing, but how do you do that?

Thanks Glenn, I thought I had tried that, but I must have done something wrong.

Nothing like leaving out an end-tag in html to really make your message or web page look totally "hosed"
