    how are the older craftsman joiners (20-30 years old) made of cast iron.

    Generally, pretty good. Great starter machines.

    depends on how they've been treated (i'd guess). i used one and a Craftsman TS from about the same era (1960s) to mill/shape/destroy all the woodwork in the house i recently built. cranked a ton of red oak thru it. only hassle i had was that the motor got real hot after continuous use ... but like i said, it processed a LOT of wood.
