    Software to design new shop

I thought around a year ago somebody posted a link for shop setup software. I am moving into a new 400 sq,Ft garage, down from 750.
I think it would be easy to do this with software, rather than pencial and paper.
Anybody have the link? Thanks in advance

    Short on floor space...

When I started to run short of floor space I looked up for inspiration and there it was: ceiling space. My air filtration, tv, and shelves are all on the ceiling. I'm at 240 sq. ft. Instead of a workbench I have a table and my router table and my midi lathe are stored underneath it. I plan on putting more things on rollers. Yes, the Grizzly program will help with spacing and the flow of wood through your shop.

    Shop Designer
There is a program that you can get a free download of at
    http://www.inthewoodshop.org/software/software.shtml
Called Shop Designer. I have used it for several years.
For a few tools not in the list I use the one the represents the bench & size it to represent the tool desired. All tools can be sized to represent the size of your own tools.
I have a floor plan of my little shop on my web page you can see it here.
    http://bartswoodshop.freeservers.com/
There is one little pop up on the right side going down just close it out.
This makes is possible to do away with the paper & cut outs of tools & taping things out on the floor.
I usually find it much easier to be wrong once in while than to try to be perfect.

My web page has a pop up. It is a free site, just close the pop up on the right side of the screen

Thanks for all your usefull information. I have 8 weeks to plan and rebuild my shop.
This includes raplacing the concrete floor, insulation and windows.
I was thinking of replacing the old garage door with a two door framed out unit, swing out type. I think I will also run heater hose in the concrete for future heating of the shop.
    Thanks, Tim

If anybody knows how to print JUST the grid/floorplan from the Grizzly site, please post it. I can't figure it out...I get the whole screen...which makes the 'shop' too small on the page.

I think there's also a planner on the WOOD mag web site.

I downloaded this program, and tried it out. It is simple to use, and does the job but not very stable. It crashed several times when I was testing. Save often if you use it!

Don I don't know what system your using but I've used this program with Win 98 & now XP & never in 5 years have I had it crash on either system. Try removing the program & re-downloading it. I keep a copy on CD.

Tim, Delta also has a shop designer program that works pretty well.

sketchup can help with your shop layout, just download the woodworking machines off their web sit and go from there. You could even see it 3-D when you're done.
