Thread: Purpleheart Square

    Purpleheart Square

I picked up a few pieces of purpleheart 8/4 stock the other day from my local Klingspor. I've been wanting to do a series of square bowls. This one is the first of 3 if I can keep them together.

I used the indexing on my "new" old lathe to outline where I wanted to texture. The pulley with the indexing on my "old" old lathe was broken so I couldn't do any indexing with it. I used a ball bit in a dremel for the texture.

Of course, this is another Al Stirt inspired piece. Our last turning meeting our demonstration was square edged bowls so this will be part of my answer to last months challenge.

Looks very nice, Raymond. I like the shape shown in the middle picture. Looks like you met the club's challenge very handily.

Simple jam chuck and carved the last bit off with a sharp chisel then sanded. I might have to re-work that part a little.

I think it looks great! Was it real chippy? The Purpleheart I have seems to be that way but it finishes nice.
