    Oil-based poly vs acrylic poly

I want to use a polyurethane finish for the top of a chest of drawers that will have to stand up to some abuse (cold drinks w/o coasters, kids dropping hard objects on it, etc.).

Will a "water based" acrylic poly give as much protection as the regular oil-based poly? Thanks for your help.

Short answer--NO. The waterborne is likely very abrasion resistant similar to the oil based, but won't be nearly as protective with respect to household chemicals, solvents and water, with, on average, waterborne is considered about as protective as lacquer. There are some waterborne finishes with crosslinker additives that do better, with manufacturers claims that they meet KCMA (Kitchen cabinet manufacturers assoc.) standards that would suggest those finishes be more durable with respect to household chemicals. Most that I have seen look like spraying is pretty much required. Check out Fuhr finishes on www.homesteadfinishing.com .

And the resistance to dropped hard objects depends pretty heavily on the wood underneath, not just the finish.
