    wood movement question

I saw a post in a guitar forum by a fellow who was making a solid body electric guitar. He cut out the body before planing it, found that the grain orientation was in the wrong direction (across the width). He figured he would compensate by gluing on a maple cap with the grain running in the proper direction (along the length). The body is mahogany, the cap is maple, and the cap looks to be about 3/8 to 1/2" thick.

I'm thinking this could be a disaster in the making, as both pieces will want to move in different directions. A Telecaster body is about 16x13". Is that large enough for wood movement to wreak havoc on his guitar? I told him I would report back with a more informed opinion than mine. Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. By the way, it really was "another fellow", not me. Here is a link to the thread.
