PC310 Collet Nut Cracks!

Hi,

I feel pretty stupid right now, last night I was putting a 1/4" roundover bit in my PC310 router and while tightening the collet nut I heard a creaking sound. I looked at the collet nut and it had 6-8 cracks or fractures around the bit opening. Now I didn't think I was overtightening, certainly not much effort was required.
Anyone ever see this?
I hope my local tool dealer has them in stock.

Also, mine is only about a year old and it was made in USA, I was at the store where I bought mine on Saturday and the new PC310 on the shelf says "Made in Mexico"! One thing I liked was the fact it was made in the usa; no more.

There may be a Bosch Colt in my future.

Sorry to hear about that. That is a good router though... a real workhorse. I would just get a new part for it.. to nice of a router to replace if it is a year old in my opinion. Maybe there was something in the collet?

I had a collet crack its fingers on my router (not a PC), and I don't know why. The replacement collet has been fine though. The replacement collet was an expensive little part too.

The first thing that leaps to mind is to question how many inch pounds you apply while ttightening the collet.

Many of us overtighten to avoid the loose flying cutter.
I suppose when in doubt the cracked nut is the lesser evil than a spinning flying cutter.

I gotta look at my PC manual to see if there is a torque spec.

Just got off the phone with Porter Cable and they are sending me a replacement no charge...nice job PC!

After the phone call I walked out into the shop here at work (cabinet shop - laminates) and the laminating dept guy told me "Oh, yeah, this has happened to us a lot with that router, thats why we use the 7310 now"

Does the 7310 have a different collet?

I love my PC310, great balance, not loud and a Pat Warner base. Depth adjustment is great...but if it dies the Bosch Colt looks good.

Not sure if the collets are different, but the collet # for a pc7310 is
#43002, which shows to fit #7310-7312-7319
