drawing a ellipse

Thanks, that was a big help. I couldn't get the one I found on FWW to work.

Piece of advise, make the oval top before you make the base. It was hard for me to get the right dimensions for the base.

Well-I made this from doug fir (haven't used string).

Works very well/solid; you could even attach a router to it. When done, just throw it away.
