Thread: Moderator Complaints Poll

For those who go to other forums...Have you ever noticed how this forum is made fun of becasue people are so "nice"? Like something is wrong with being "nice"! I've said it before...I come here because most other places become a shouting match with people picking sides and deciding how things must be. Decent discussions are becoming so few and far between nowadays...I come here because people like Ken have the backbone to stand up and say...enough.

Keep it up Ken...I respect and need what you do.

While I believe that you're (mostly) doing a fine job, I found that remark extremely patronizing. I don't think the underlying spirit of SMC is served by trivializing members' opinions as "nothing better to do".

I also found this statement a bit disturbing but only the part highlighted. I think "pot-stirrers" while normally viewed as a negative entitiy can, in turn bring some excitement and "out of the box" thinking into a conversation. I've learned a lot from the "pot-stirrers" on here!

I think the moderating is a bit too severe at times and I do disagree with the (most-recent) SawStop thread being closed. I thought it was moving along pretty well and we were all behaving ourselves.

Also, the ability to not provide links has gotten a bit silly. I don't think it is too terribly difficult to discern porn sites links from ebay links from www.thenextww'ingwidgetyoumusthave.com sites and just because it may have a forum, so what! This site is a private site, commercial free...what's to be afraid of links to other forums? I don't get it.

However, at the end of the day, I overall think you, Ken, do a fine job of moderating and following the TOS to the best of your ability...you are to be commended for that and promoted to Super-Dooper Moderator status if the powers that be are so inclined! Peace!

Did you know SMC is user supported? Please help.

    SMC the standard bearer

I think that the level of moderation present at SMC keeps this site the friendly, helpful, and informative community that it is. Due to the nature of the internet and the impersonal nature of typing rather than talking, an unmoderated discussion forum will devolve into sniping and childishness. Sadly, that's just how it is.

In the past I've run forums similar to this one, but on different topics, and participate on a few more. I refer the people who run other forums to check out SMC as an example of how to structure rules if they want to have a forum that truly becomes a community, and not just a collection of posters.

How many other sites are user supported? I suspect very few. There is another testament about the degree to which people who participate on this site appreciate its content.

I appreciate Ken's starting this thread to get feedback on the job that he and the other moderators do, and that is just another example of why this place works. You'll never make everyone happy all the time, but I think the vast majority of SMC participants very much appreciate this unique site. And frankly, for users who enjoy reading emotionally charged flame wars (which I'm sure some people do), there are plenty of other forums available where they can get that sort of entertainment. To each his own.

Great job Ken. It isn't easy enforcing the rules. I had written more and deleted it as no more need be said.

I just want to thank you Ken and all the other moderators for the outstanding work you folks do. The TOS are what seperates this site from the rest. Having a higher standard is a good thing.

Okay Ken, here's the news we've all been waiting for:

Based on the early returns and some exit polling, all four networks and CNN have declared you the winner by a landslide.

    Get back to work.
    Cheers,
    Bob

Ken, I think you are doing a great job as moderator! Furthermore, I think that the overwhelming majority of Creekers are appreciative of the work that all the moderators do to help in the daily operations of SMC.

The SMC culture is one of civility (OK, sometimes we stray). One reason for that culture is the moderators fulfilling their responsibilities. When a moderator is forced to make a judgement call, there will allways be some who disagree. All you can do is make the call according to YOUR best judgement.

It appears that from time to time, SMC gets an influx of new members used to other forums, and because they are not familiar with SMC rules or culture, it takes some adjustment for them to accept our "more polite" ways. Without your vigilance we would soon lose our identity. Thanks for your efforts.

I would have no idea how to do your job, I’m sure it isn’t easy.
I didn't vote, because there was not a box for "a little too severe" or maybe more properly too careful, but agree with everything Bruce said.

Ken I am manager and moderator on another site so I know the amount of work it takes to be a mod. There are TOU and if folks don't abide by the TOU then they can't fault you for doiinig your job. Keep up the great work.

    Thumbs up

This site is THE premier woodworking forum on the internet in my opinion, and you Ken have a lot to do with that opinion!!!
I also agree with Roger Myers thoughts, although I didn't come here from the pond.
The reason I stay here is the fact that this site is kept faily well in check!!
There are new members here that came over from some site that has to do with wood in a net, that seem to think the actions allowed there work here as well, If that is ever the case I'm gone.
There are others that have been here a long time that are just too thin skinned, no matter what is said they will get their hair up, not to much you or anyone else can do about that.

    Talking

    You're alright Ken !!!!!!!!!!!!1

What you do that I see, I have no problem with.

One of the disadvantages of email (or forums) is that one cannot tell the body language or tone of voice that people are speaking (guilty!!!!! as charged). I have a warped sense of humor and it can come across sometimes (however it is interpretted) that I am either being obnoxious or funny. Not just on this forum too.

What you do is awesome and the fee we pay for your services, I love it!!!!!!

I would suggest that even your comment of "nothing better to do" was typed with a light heart. (maybe)

Go have a Bud light and love that puppy. :-)

I wish I could have a dog mentally and love unconditionally (just a thought)..
